I've been making baklava for years. This is a great recipe for Baklava! I had phyllo dough that had been in the freezer for a while and was starting to dry out, so I decided to make this recipe.

The ingredients needed to make Homemade Baklava:
  1. Prepare 250 g strudel dough or 16 layers phyllo pastry
  2. Get 125 g unsalted butter, melted
  3. Prepare 1/2 cup pecans
  4. Get 1/2 cup macadamia
  5. Make ready 2 teaspoons cinnamon, ground
  6. Get Syrup
  7. Prepare 1 cup sugar
  8. Make ready 3/4 cups water
  9. Prepare 2 tablespoons lemon juice

I can sweep past the window of patisseries without having to fight an urge to pop in. But if there's one sweet thing that makes me hesitate - and breaks me more often that I care to admit - it's Baklava. This is THE Dessert to make when you want to impress the pants off your family and friends. Baklava is a rich, decadent dessert recipe made of layers of flaky filo dough, filled with chopped roasted walnuts, and sweetened with a sticky honey sauce.

Instructions to make Homemade Baklava:
  1. In a pot add the syrup ingredients which is sugar, water, lemon juice and honey. Heat until sugar is dissolved. Turn off heat and let cool down.
  2. Chop nuts (pecans and macadamia) finely and mix with ground cinnamon
  3. Preheat oven to 160°C. In a oven proof dish spread a layer of unsalted butter, lay a sheet of strudel or phylly pastry, spread butter again. Do this for 5 layers. Add a layer of nut mixture (third of the nut mixture)
  4. Add 3 layers of strudel or phyllo pastry with butter between each layer. Add another layer of nut mixture. Repeat one more time.
  5. Last layer should be like first layer with 5 strudel or phyllo pastry sheets. Butter between each layer.
  6. Cut into squares right to the bottom of the dish.
  7. Bake in 160°C oven for 1 hour 15 minutes or until top layer is golden brown.
  8. Remove from oven, let cool slightly. Pour syrup over baklava.
  9. Enjoy with a cup of tea!

I grew up eating baklava and it's truly one of my favorite sweet treats. Make syrup while baklava is baking. Boil sugar and water until sugar is dissolved. Remove baklava from oven and immediately pour cooled. When making this baklava recipe, it helps to think of the ingredients list in three different components: Phyllo pastry-find frozen phyllo dough in the freezer section next to things like pie crust.
