In a large bowl, combine the oats, nuts, coconut, and brown sugar. In a separate bowl, combine maple syrup, oil, and salt. I learned this recipe while working at a Bed and Breakfast in DC.

The ingredients needed to make Granola:
  1. Get "dry ingredients"
  2. Get 7 cups old fashioned oats
  3. Prepare 1 cup wheat bran
  4. Take 1 cup flax meal
  5. Get "flavorings"
  6. Prepare 1/4 cup canola, coconut or olive oil
  7. Prepare 1/4 cup applesauce
  8. Prepare 1/2 cup brown or raw sugar
  9. Prepare 1/2 cup honey or agave
  10. Prepare 1/2 cup water
  11. Get 2 teaspoons turmeric
  12. Make ready 1 tablespoon vanilla, maple or almond extract

Granola is loaded with healthy ingredients like oats, nuts, seeds and fruit. This granola recipe is also a far more healthy granola option, since it's made with whole grains, unrefined oil and naturally sweetened. You just can't beat freshly baked granola packed with delicious and good-for-you ingredients. Plus, homemade granola is super easy to make.

Steps to make Granola:
  1. Preheat oven to 275° F or 135° C
  2. Mix oats, bran & flax in a large roasting pan.
  3. Whisk the "flavorings" together and then drizzle over the oat mixture. Stir until evenly moist.
  4. Bake for 1-1/2 hours – stirring every 15 minutes.
  5. After the third stirring, add the "nuts, seeds & fruits".
  6. Bake for an additional 15 minutes.
  7. Allow to cool completely. Store in an airtight container.
  8. NOTE: I have experimented with the balance and quantities of the fats and sugars. As I reduced the fat, the texture went from crunchy to chewy. I did not have success with less than 1/4 cup of fat. I have also sometimes replaced the more processed sugars with unsweetened frozen juice concentrate.
  9. Serving size - 1/4 cup

Granola is a breakfast food and snack food consisting of rolled oats, nuts, honey or other sweeteners such as brown sugar, and sometimes puffed rice, that is usually baked until it is crisp, toasted and golden brown. During the baking process, the mixture is stirred to maintain a loose breakfast cereal consistency. Dried fruit, such as raisins and dates, and confections such as chocolate are.
